Gordon Valentine Trustee
A trustee with the National Police Community Trust since its inception.
Gordon retired from the Metropolitan Police after serving thirty-eight years.
His career included time as a Detective Inspector on the Specialist Crime Directorate.
Since leaving the police service he has worked for England Boxing as their National Compliance Manager being the organisational lead for Discipline, Safeguarding and Anti-Doping.
His knowledge and experience became the perfect fit for the start up of the National Police Commuity Trust.
Derek Rulten Trustee
Derek is a retired Superintendent from Essex Police who now devotes his time to working directly with The Trust.
Before retirement, he was lead Officer for the Essex Police Community Services Branch with responsibility for dealing with young offenders and safeguarding.
He was also appointed as the Officer in Charge of a young offenders Attendance Centre.
In his younger days he was a talented boxer and, since his retirement from competing, has devoted many years coaching youngsters and training officials for the sport.
Paul Porter Trustee
England Boxing former CEO founded and managed the Bradford Police and College Boxing Academy in 2008. Specialising in the use of boxing as an element in youth engagement and education projects, inc schools, colleges, universities & Doncaster Prison through a programme that trained soon-to-be-released prisoners as boxing coaches and mentored them on release into their local clubs.
In 2018 Paul was appointed to the post of Senior Sport Programme Manager [worldwide] at AIBA the world governing body of Olympic Boxing.
As an event manager Paul has the strongest pedigree within British boxing, including the following:
London 2012 Olympic Games – Field of Play Manager (Boxing)
Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games – Technical Operations Manager (Boxing)
Baku 2015 European Games – Competition Manager (Boxing)
Ashgabat 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games – Lead Planner for Sport and Medical
Gerry Sutcliffe Trustee
Gerry was selected as the Labour candidate in 1994. In Parliament, he served on the Public Accounts Committee from 1996 - 1998, & was a member of the Unopposed Bills Panel from 1997 -1999.
From 2003 - 2006 he was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry, with responsibility for employment and for consumer and competition policy. In 2006 he moved to the Home Office, as Minister for Prisons and the Probation Service.
Gerry retired as a Member of Parliament in March 2006.
After twelve years as a Patron of the Trust, he became a Trustee in 2018.
In May 2007 as a result of a reorganisation of the Home Office, Gerry became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the newly formed Ministry of Justice. He stayed there only a short time until June 2007, he moved to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport taking up the post as the Minister for Tourism & Sport.
John Biggin OBE Trustee
John has a wide experience of management within the Criminal Justice sector in high profile environments, where excellent stakeholder and customer relations skills as well as effective risk management were absolutely key.
John has significant experience within the public sector Prison Service operating at all grades up to and including Governor and, Prison Director in charge of three large complex prisons.

of setting the strategic direction of organisations, delivering significant organisational change and performance improvement, as well as specialising in Organisational Modelling, Staffing Solutions and Strategic and Business Planning.John is regarded as a visionary leader and regarded by many within the sector, as well as outside, as being at the forefront of transforming rehabilitation.
John was invested in the 2014 New Years Honours List with an OBE for ‘Services to Offender Management and Rehabilitation’.
Lord John Stevens Patron
Lord John Stevens QPM KSt.J DL FRSA
Baron Stevens of Kirkwhelpington
Lord Stevens became a Patron of the Trust in 2005.
Chief Constable of Northumbria Police 1991-1996, appointed as a Inspector of Constabulary 1996-1998, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police 1998-2000 and ultimately appointed to the post of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 2000.
He was knighted in 2000 and after a distinguished career of some 42 years in the police service, he was awarded a life peerage on his last day as a police officer in January 2005.
Martin Hewitt QPM Patron
Martin moved from the Metropolitan Police to become the Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council in April 2019.
Martin joined Kent Police in 1993 after seven years as a British Army Officer. He served in a number of detective and uniformed roles in Kent developing a specialism in intelligence and investigative work in both the crime and counter-terrorism worlds.
In 2005 he transferred to the Metropolitan Police Service as a Detective Chief Superintendent and held a number of posts within the Specialist Crime arena up to the rank of Assistant Commissioner.
As an Assistant Commissioner, he held a number of portfolios before he moved to his current role.
For a number of years, Martin held the national police portfolio for Adult Sexual Offences and for Kidnap and Extortion. He became an Honorary Research Associate at University College London (UCL) Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science.
Barry Jones MBE Volunteer Sports Projects, Safeguarding & Citizenship
Barry initiated the concept of Trust whilst serving in the Metropolitan Police.
Following twelve years with the Armed Forces (British Army – Royal Engineers) Barry worked for HM Prison Service before joining the Metropolitan Police where he had an extremely varied career. This included membership of the Central London Vice Unit, the Flying Squad, The Paedophile Unit at New Scotland Yard and latterly serving a number of years within the Serious Crime Directorate where he was instrumental in forming and managing the first,
joint agency Ports team combatting Child Trafficking at London’s Heathrow Airport and beyond.
Upon retirement, Barry was engaged by the Home Office Immigration Department to ‘scope’ their further readiness to extend that team’s expertise nationwide. Since he relinquished his position of Trustee in 2018, Barry has concentrated his efforts on broadening the great work of the Police Clubs independently of the Trust.
Michael Gannon BEM Volunteer Sports Coaching
One of our two Olympic Boxing consultants, Mick joined the British Army at 15 years of age. During a fine career in the armed forces Mick won numerous junior and senior army titles. He was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 1987 Queens Birthday Honours for services to the sport of amateur boxing. He was the British Army boxing team coach from 1982 – 1993 at which time he retired from the army as a Warrant Officer. Taking up post as a Officer safety Training Instructor for the Police Service, Mick became the Police Boxing Association Chief Coach, a post he held until 2007 when he was appointed National Coach to the National Governing Body the ABA of England until 2014.
Michael Hunter Volunteer
Michael has been involved in Olympic boxing for many years having won numerous regional and national tiles before boxing for England. Having completed his career as an athlete, he remained in the sport to train as a coach which has culminated in his present qualification as a Level 3 England Coach as well as a national Coach Educator.
Michael also served within the Metropolitan Police between 2004 and 2015.
Since then he has taken up numerous coaching roles within the National Boxing Talent identification programme. Latterly he has been head coach in two London College Sports academies.
Steve Arkley Volunteer Citizenship
Steve has spent 25 years leading multi-agency criminal justice partnerships. He has extensive project management experience, working at a senior level across Police, Local Authority, Health, Probation, Youth Justice and Prison services.
Steve is a contributor to some of our education and citizenship programmes. This includes project managing 15 short films addressing knife crime and gang violence in London, producing some children’s books and, developing a unique Hate Crime resource based on an animated film.
Steve has developed a strong team of graphic designers, illustrators, film makers and education specialists to support his work.
